Fashion has rebellion and fashion has always been like a statement. And it works. There's fashion for hippies and fashion for punks and fashion for rockers. It's bizarre that there's almost like a uniform. We're using fashion to fit into groups, to be part of something. And literally you wear it on your sleeve, you know."

"Yeah, it's kind of belonging, but also differentiation. So differentiating yourself from one group, but establishing your belonging to another group."

"I think for me, it sends a really clear message to our own community. Particularly with the the idea of communities coming together, you know, regardless of what street you live in, regardless of your ethnic background, just about people coming together as one community, to celebrate and have good times and get to know each other. And I think that's quite symbolic of the times we're in at the moment, going through COVID-19, where people are coming together, through mutual aid and neighbourliness, and so that's what that says for me."

"It's got a DIY look about it. Although it's probably not. It's probably a really expensive designer T shirt. Is that why it's in the collection?"

"Actually it was worn by the Keeper of Costume at Platt Hall in the 1980s, when she went on CND marches. So it is about fashion as belonging, and belief in a cause. I think the DIY thing that you say is quite interesting. That seems to be a thing now too. Doing it yourself as a political act, a grassroots thing that works from the bottom up."
