We are part of Manchester City Council (MCC) and you can also find all our vacancies on the council’s central jobs website.
Platt Hall recognises that our staff profile does not reflect the diversity of cultures and experiences that make up the city’s resident population. We want to change this because we know we will better serve the city if we are representative of it. We know that recruitment processes can be daunting, and lots of people with valuable experience are put off applying for roles because the process of applying for a job isn’t straightforward. We want to make the application process clearer, to ensure that people with a wide breadth of experiences can apply for advertised roles, feeling confident in how their own skills and abilities align with the jobs on offer.
If you are applying for a job at Platt Hall, we hope the following information will help you:
Each job advertised will have the contact information of a named individual who you can call or email to ask specific questions you might have, to help you better understand what the role involves on a day-to-day, individual and team level
For some roles, we will have 'find out more' sessions during the period the job is being advertised. These will be in person and/or online as appropriate.
If you're applying for a role at the gallery, check the grade (level of responsibility). Roles that are grade 3 and below are only open to people who are living within Manchester (the area covered by Manchester City Council) . If you live outside of this area, you will be able to submit an application, but it will not be considered by recruiting staff within the service. We know how much effort goes into completing a job application, so please check you qualify before starting an application. You can check whether your postcode is within MCC here [Find your local council - GOV.UK]
All jobs at MCC have something called a 'Role Profile' which outlines the key generic and technical skills of any role in the council, the level of accountability and responsibility that role has, and where it sits within the council. This document is attached to all job adverts and is often mistaken for the job specification. A lot of the information on the Role Profile is very general, which can make it hard to know what is important. When reading a role profile, the following points are the most important to remember:
-
The Key Role Descriptors and Key Role Accountabilities sections are generic and used across MCC for any role in that 'job family' and at that grade. These sections are not a priority for applicants looking to align their skills and experience.
-
The Role Portfolio section gives you information on the service (e.g. Platt Hall), the team the role is in, and the role itself. Information detailed here about the specific role is important and this is what you should use when filling in your application, to make sure the person reading your application can clearly see how your skills and experience are relevant to the role.
-
Our Manchester Behaviours are a set of values that frame all the work across every part of MCC. While you don't need to reference them specifically, these are attitudes and ways of working that would be expected from all MCC employees and it may be relevant for certain roles to reference them directly.
-
Generic Skills are just that - they are general skills that we expect the role holder to have. The list will be tailored to the needs of the specific role and the description tells you what level of skill and experience is needed. You do not need to go into these in detail in an application, but where possible reference the most relevant ones. For example, does the role you are applying for manage other staff? Then make sure you can speak to the skills outlined for 'people management' in this list.
-
Technical requirements are things that you MUST know or understand in order to do the specific role you are applying for. You should highlight how you meet these requirements in your application.
-
All jobs are advertised on the MCC vacancy webpage, including those for Platt Hall. This will contain the most relevant information you need to apply for the role. Make sure you read the sections titled ‘about the role’ and ‘about the candidate’ thoroughly, and refer to any essential and desirable skills or experience mentioned here.
To apply for a job at Platt Hall, you will need to create an account via the MCC Vacancies portal, known as eploy [Careers - Manchester City Council]. Application is via this online process only. Please remember the following important points when you are filling in your application:
-
Make sure you fill in all the boxes - If the form is not complete, then the person reading your application may reject it. For example, even if you choose to attach a CV, make sure you fill in the 'personal statement' section and include all the relevant information to the role. This is the greatest opportunity for you to promote yourself, so don't miss it!
-
You don’t need to include a CV: uploading a CV is an optional extra but you won’t be penalised for not doing it.
Make sure you know what the main duties of the role are and cover them in your application (using the Role Profile and Job Advert). The person reading your application will be reading many applications, so make it easy for them to see how your skills and experience meet the needs of the role. If you haven't worked in a gallery before, you may still have lots of skills and experiences you can transfer from your personal and professional life - don't be shy, make sure you draw attention to them!

What happens next?
All job adverts include the closing date for applying, and the date of interview for successful applicants. If you are unsuccessful in getting an interview, the MCC Eploy system will send you an email informing you that you have not been selected for interview. Given the quantity of applications we receive, we do not offer feedback on applications as standard, but if you would like some feedback, please email the recruiting manager who will do their best to offer some basic feedback via email.
If you are offered an interview, you will receive an email from the recruiting manager. How the interview is structured will depend on the role and its activities, the team it sits in, and the grade. You may be asked to attend a traditional interview with set questions, or you might be asked to take part in a group assessment and then an individual interview. You may be asked to give a presentation. Where possible, we will provide interviewees with the interview questions 48 hours in advance. We encourage preparation if it helps you, but please do not bring scripted answers into the interview. We may ask additional follow-up questions that you have not been given in advance, but they will relate to the questions you have already seen.
What happens after an interview?: If you are the successful candidate, the recruiting manager will phone you to give you the good news, and explain the process of accepting a role at MCC during that call. If you are unsuccessful in being appointed to a role, the recruiting manager (who would have led your interview panel) will call you (or email if you prefer) and let you know you have not been successful. They may be able to give you some feedback on the phone, but if you’d like more detailed feedback on your interview, then they will email you with more details.
